My husband even started joining us to listen after hearing part of the first one during a long trip in the car. My 8 year old 2nd grader reads on a 4th grade level, but interests are still 2nd grade.

She loves this series. I would guess this would be an engaging read for 2nd through 5th grade, and even older. Because this is the whole set, it makes for a perfect birthday gift for friends. I just ordered several and keep them ready for those last minute classmate birthday invitations.

We have only read the first book together, children 8 and 10, but it was loved by ALL ages. Friends are reading for a book club this summer and the ages are from 14 to 6. Still loved by all. Likewise, the adults are neither clueless idiots nor sappy sentimentalists. This gives you time to piece his character together instead of having everything revealed all at once. I like this technique and it shows Stewart has a fine hand.

And, believe it or not, even the villains are noteworthy. But we get levels of baddies in this trilogy, from ruffian kid associates to highly-trained hit men-esque figures. The principal antagonist of the trilogy is Ledropatha Curtain, who, at first, seems unbeatable and has some fairly nefarious plans.

His connection in the trilogy will be fairly evident to adult readers though perceptive young readers might pick it up, too. It gives them a sinister quality that, in some respects, is more frightening than Curtain since they pose more of an overt, physical danger to the protagonists. Yet their seemingly sadistic pleasure in seeing others frightened or bested was another more adult aspect of the novels that I enjoyed.

The fact they keep a cool, collected, polished exterior adds to the mystique. Or even an alley during the daytime. Not that you can tell. The last thing I loved about this trilogy was the puns. Some people hate puns but I like them provided the humor and timing is right. Concerning content, there is no profanity or sexual material of any kind in the entire trilogy. But their image is softened by the fact that they use rather ordinary objects as weapons.

Any child who would be most bothered by these parts would probably be too young to read these books based on their length and complexity of plot. Overall, The Mysterious Benedict Society was a surprise hit for me and I sense it might satisfy a wide palette of literary tastes. It was actually a blind bookstore buy for me as I spied the cover, read the back blurb, and scanned through the opening paragraph.

So in a word or make that three: Jul 02, Laura Odom rated it really liked it. This delightful juvenile fiction series is one my eldest daughter has been encouraging me to read for at least a year.

I guess I should have listened to her sooner, because I loved the books. They take the story of a team of four gifted children and a few adult mentors, through adventures that result in saving the world from the plots of the evil Mr.

The children are each gifted in different ways, and watching them pool their talent and figuring things out makes for lots of fun. The boo This delightful juvenile fiction series is one my eldest daughter has been encouraging me to read for at least a year. The books are quirky and light-hearted, and I highly recommend them for both adults and children alike!

Nov 15, Kacee rated it it was amazing. How did I not hear more about these fantastic books before now? They are better than the Spiderwick Chronicles and the Series of Unfortunate Events both of which got a lot more press and feature films too.

The characters are plucky and endearing, the storylines clip along at a fast pace with more than enough twists and turns to keep you reading. I love that these books celebrate kids who are smart--in a variety of ways-- inventive, brave and kindhearted. May 17, Grace rated it it was amazing. This is one of my favorite series of all time. With quirky characters, an unusual plot, and dry wit laced through it all, Stewart crafts and uncommonly well-written story.

With prose that sparkles and engages the reader, and with a plot riddled with riddles, Stewart constructs a face-paced and lovely series with each book better than the last. Truly, these books are a gift, and the enchantment I feel when rereading them never diminishes. These books will always have a special place in my heart. I bought the collection as a whole for my nook. Apr 28, Fran rated it liked it.

But here I am, or here this re Magnum Opus: But here I am, or here this review is, to tell you about that poor, ignored book: Benedict, they get electrified, handcuffed, and chased during their struggles to defeat Ledroptha Curtain Mr.

Curtain is also dangerous. Will the Mysterious Benedict Society survive? The Mysterious Benedict Society book no. Every day the Executives Mr. In this book, Mr.

Benedict is kidnapped by Mr. Benedict leaves behind clues wherever he is taken. You could say that the book smells of mystery. Although I did get a little confused when the Ten Men launched their assault on the Society, one question thundered through my head as I read it: This trilogy was a magnum opus.

Remember, never judge a book by its cover. Especially not this one!
